Guided Treasure Hunts & Tours
New Mexico: The Land of Enchantment
Welcome to the Caballo Mountain Tour. This day trip leaves Truth or Consequences, New Mexico in an air conditioned vehicle between eight and eight thirty AM on a journey that will be a day to remember. We first enter the western half of the Joronado Del Muerto (journey of the dead man) and travel for thirty minutes or so until reaching the eastern slope of the Caballo Mountains. From there we will climb steadily upward as the panoramic views begin to unfold with the increase in elevation. Soon the Elephant Butte Lake and the Caballo Lake will both be visual experiences. Before long we will be making photo stops and marine fossil searches then on to the summit where the towers are located.
From the towers we will be traveling over a difficult four-wheel drive road that was originally constructed by the US Army around 1946. There will be stops along the way to view an abandoned Jesuit Mission site and the Apache Agave’ pits or just to take in the stunning views from this vantage point. Eventually we will enter the alpine valley where the Taggert Claim is located and spend some time touring this area and gathering crystals. Then on to the Don Fingado cabin site at which time lunch will be served.
Once lunch is completed we will continue on to the end of the road overlooking Bat Cave Canyon to the west. During this entire trip there will be narratives of the events that shaped the history of this extremely remote area of New Mexico. The tourist can expect to be back in Truth or Consequences between three thirty and four thirty PM. Prospective tourists should call for prices and booking information.
We will be touring at an elevation nearing 8,000’ for a goodly part of the day and those with respiratory problems should consider carefully if this would create a significent health hazard. It should also be noted that there are no sanitary facilities available at these remote destinations.
